You might have a loose shift lever at the trans, or a bad shift cable.

mine has been doing the same as well. changed out NSBU the other day, for the second time, worked great for a couple of days, and all the lights came back on again. How can that fix it up for a couple of days and then go again, I dont get it.

can anyone tell me exactly wherethe ignition switch is on column? My son had it apart and he says he cant find it. Also I checked on the NSBU switch at napa and they gave me a price of 180 because I have the 5 speed tranny. Does this sound right?

Anyone have any input

hi im new to the whole diesle forum thing but i have a 2004.5 duramax lly it has 263k on it but runs like a dream i use my ppe tuner on level 6 just to smoke around on the weekends the tranny shifts fine with it but will limp if i floor it on the highway

Okay so today got back to school and i couldnt shift it in park, unhooked linkage from tranmision and it shifts fine by hand, then hook back up linkage and it wont shift into park. Handle goes into park but she stays in reverse and itll back up when its suposed to be in park. Any suggestions?

Is it normal to see the shift range prohibited message, every once in awhile? I've noticed it a few times when I was shifting between reverse and drive, I just went back into P and shifted to D. This has happened for a few years.

NO, not normal--You should never see the display. Probably a NSBU switch--

They are exposed to the weather and can get water and dirt-- that affects the contacts.

I'll check it out when I service it next week. It never got worse, just a few times when jockey'n around.

Its not the cylinder but the actual ignition switch and it is to the right under the colum i belive it is right up against where the cylinder slides into.
Hey,

I am a newbe and I know I will be on this group more and more. Have a 2003 GMC Sierra 2500HD and am having the Range Shift issue. I have replaced the NSBU with no success. I am noticing in the thread that the next thing to look at is Ignition Switch. Does anyone have a part number. Looks like an easy replacement but not sure what part to get. This is my first time tackling a repair on this truck. I am basically a home grown mechanic. Most work I have done is on my 85 Toyota 4Runner. I have replaced engine , cluches, brake shoes and most other parts. I have been hesitant to tackle the Duramax but here I go....

I don't have the part number off hand. Not sure if the one I have is even the same one (most likely it is but you know how they love to change things between model years) call your local dealership and make sure you have the last 8 of your vin number. Don't know how it is where you guys are but all the Chevy gmc dealers around me won't even talk to you with out having thy info. Don't know why they think there better than anyone. But with that info they should be able to help you out and then you can shop around and see if you can get it cheaper if you would like.

So its the actual ignition? Would this mean I would have a new key to start the truck? I think I am missing something....

The switch is separate from the cylinder and key assy.

The remove the ignition switch, first remove the cover under the steering column. with the cover off, the switch is easy to remove-- just pull down on the wire -switch is held in by two plastic tabs. Notice the switch is a square box and a gear on one end. When you turn the key, it rotates the gear and closes contacts in the switch-- the new switch it is set to "ON", so have the key part to on before you slide the new switch in. It should be indexed correctly then.

No it's just a switch that unplugs an pops right out. Sometime in the 90s Chevy switched over to looking up parts by vin number and the dealers squally only order parts this way for accuracy do they don't get returns and wrong parts
