NAPA and some parts stores also have the switch. Aftermarket appears to be OK on my truck, after several years.

Sweet. Job Completed. It was the ignition switch. Took the truck around the block a few times putting it in reverse 6 times with no issues. I had a little difficulty putting the switch back in but just had to move the gear teeth on the new switch. I did put the key in the on position when I removed the old one but it appeared the new switch was in the off/remove. Thanks for all the assistance!! Now its time for new tires and some long awaited camping with the 5th wheel for the wife and I.

I have been getting this message from time to time for the past few months. It always does it while I am actually in the process of backing up. I will be backing up, and it just feels like the truck falls into neutral. I then of course check the dic and see the range shift inhibited message. Does this sound more indicative of the NSBU, or the ignition switch? I have read through the thread, and noticed that most of the time, its happening when people actually shift into gear. Once the ignition switch gets you into gear, does it just go dormant until you shift again? Thanks

Any update to this my truck gives me hell with this in cold weather only. In the summer time I get no issues, but as soon as the weather gets cool the truck goes to neutral and the shift lights disappear on the dash. I get the code 0700 when I run a diagnostic with the tuner.

Is it damp and dew on the ground where you are in the winter? If so I would say nsbu is staying damp and causing the issue unlike it drying out quick in the summer since it is exposed on the side of the trans. Mine was at random times for no reason I couldn't get it to stop until I put the output sensor for the transfer case in. Only time in my life I ever ha to pay someone to figure my truck out

Mine is doing the same thing in the cold, already replaced my nsbu or what ever switch and still have problems, everyone is saying ignition switch but why would that be the case if its cold? Not wet cold and no dew on the ground either keep the truck in the garage at night and its fine, can anyone share a similar experience with a solution? This stuff can get expensive quick! Oh and my check engine light comes on at the same time with the 0700 code

ok i have a 2002 duramax 4x2 and its driving me NUTS.. no codes. new nsbu. new internal solonoids/ manifold pressure sensor and internal wiring. new pig tails on the nsbu..

can start the truck put it in any gear and just blinks the dang light at me.. put my 03 8.1l allison computer on it and it pops about 7 codes and will shift into drive but not show the d on the dash as long as its at 1000-1200 rpms..

does this still sound like the ignition switch?

Well I changed my fluid got it hot topped it off one more time read on one of the dmax forums a Allison brochure/pamplet about temperature and range shift inhibited and so far in 22* weather (which is freezing ass cold here in Texas) no more issues, I think the tranny was a little low and that was my main problem,(had it serviced 1 month ago) want something done right do it ur self!

Range shift Inhibited

I got this over Christmas was -35*C it was for Reverse. I had dropped the trans oil to "Full Cold" this was down from about 3/4's of the way to "full hot" When I added oil I got the use back for reverse but my shift points for 5th gear are not aobut 2000 rpm not the about 1600 when the oil is warm. Have tried the unhooking battery for an hour but that didn't work. So this is what I am tring to fix???

Thanks :)

I'm no expert but from everything I have read the Allison changes the shift points to a higher rpm until it meets the desired operating temperature. So maybe that's part of your problem, Does your check engine light come on? If so have you found out what codes? Mine did it again to me yesterday and I have bigger problems had 2 different codes for the transmission pressure switch (P0841 P0871)

Id try the NBSU switch next considering its locking you out if all your gears. Pretty easy to i install too.
