Has anyone had any experience with S&B Filters' replacement fuel tanks? I recently learned S&B was making offering these when I had called a local diesel shop inquiring about the Titan tanks.

I've had nothing but good experiences with the S&B products I've used before, but the fuel tanks are new to me.

We'll be towing a 5th wheel soon and having the extra fuel capacity would be beneficial. It can be difficult to find fuel stations large enough to accommodate a large trailer once you get away from the interstates out west.

Cool, keep us posted if you don't mind please. The tanks for the L5P do not come with a new sending unit, but instead the OEM unit is removed from the factory tank and reinstalled with a new float in the S&B tank.

Install seems pretty straight forward.

Yes, keep us posted. I know they are out of stock right now, but we plan to upgrade when they get more in stock.

Looking forward to your thoughts both on the install and on the end product once installed.

Same here ...keep us posted. I was going to make this mod, however I have heard mixed comments on the results. Would like to know how your gage reads, as well as any other issues that may result.

That's my hang up as well - not being able to reprogram for the larger tank volume like can be done on the Fords.

From what I've read, the DTE and fuel level will be slightly inaccurate. The MPGs will still be accurate.

The fuel level is likely to stay on Full for longer, eventually dropping off after many miles have been driven.

These are the things I've read about the Titan tank - not sure if the S&B will respond the same way since it has a different float to better read the fuel level.

I just really wish there was a way to reprogram the truck for this change. Even still, I'll probably still do it. Fill ups will suck, but when I'm not towing having a 1000+ mile range will be awesome!

I ordered the tank today from S&B. It's on backorder, but at least this gets my a spot in line. No indication how long the tank is expected to be on backorder.

Coincidentally, I noticed that Titan Fuel tanks has raised its pricing. The Titan XXL for shortbed GMC/Chevrolet is not $1269, which is $20 more than the larger S&B tank.

My tank was delivery yesterday despite the backorder status. It is an impressive piece and seems worthy of the S&B reputation.

Now I just need a truck to put it on!

I would prefer a Transfer Flow tank since that is what I will have in the bed but they don’t appear to offer an OEM replacement for our trucks. Not crazy about not being able to reprogram the miles to empty but whatever. S&B told me most orders were shipping about three weeks after order date. That is for a 62 gallon tank for a short bed. Not sure if they offer a bigger tank for long beds.

DTE on the DIC will be off, but the MPG value should be accurate. DTE will only be inaccurate because the truck ECM/BCM won't be aware of the extra capacity.

The new/extended float for the 2020+ tanks should help with keeping the fuel gauge accurately reading. Except whereas on a stock tank 1/4 tank = ~9gal, the S&B 1/4 tank = ~15.5 gal.

I believe that's only on the first couple of fill ups. The computer will learn the new 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 & full miles after several cycles. I guess I'll find out after my install in a couple of weeks...

It'll sure be easier to add the Schaeffer fuel treatment since their ratio is 16oz/125gal or 8oz/62gal...

That would be great if the 2020+ does that too. With an approximate 1200 mile range, it'll take me a little while to run through a few tanks unless we're towing!

Finally had time to get to the tank installed today. Did it at home with the rear of the truck up on jack stands. With the help of my good buddy, we were able to get it done without any major problems - except I did damage one of the clips on the supply fuel line. I found a nearby dealer that had the line in stock and my wife ran to pick it up for me. Not a big deal at all, really. And despite the cost of the replacement line, I’m still way ahead of paying a shop to install the tank.

The tank is a tight fit - S & B really used as much space as they could. I was also happy that it still cleared the Air Lift air bag too.

It’s a 2 person job and it’s not hard. Some parts are awkward, but you come up with creative ways to remove the old and install the new.

Anyway, it really doesn’t hang down much lower than stock. Maybe 1” or 1.5”?

Here’s a picture of the completed install.

Any report on gauge functionality yet?

Can’t wait to hear your honest feedback. Like others have said, I am particularly interested in your feedback on DTE and if the gauge reads correctly.

This would be perfect for those of us traveling anywhere north of Flagstaff Arizona where good diesel if hard to come buy.

I still have not reached the time to refuel after 6 weeks and that includes towing our 11k# TT 90 miles into the mountains. I still have just under a 1/4 tank left. We're heading to Spearfish SD on the 18th so I'll be able to see how far I can go towing the trailer. The only down side is our first stop is near Pinedale WY and they're still pumping winter diesel...

Low Fuel light & chime finally came on and the info screen said “33 miles to empty”. Stopped at Phillips 66 and pumped 51.2 gallons before the pump shut off at $170.
Unfortunately I was running late so I couldn’t top off but I will tomorrow after using a couple of gallons running errands before we head to Spearfish SD with the TT for 10 days...

I hope a long box version arrives soon. Just got a 2021 Denali Dually. 36 gallons just isn't enough

It's still adjusting to the Distance to Empty. The stock fuel gauge shows accurately and the Banks iDash shows the fuel level as an actual percentage, also accurately. Most of my driving thus far has been towing, so I'm still working my way through a full tank without towing - and that takes a while as I'm expecting around 1000 +/- from a full tank.

I also contacted White Automotive and Media Services as they do offer a lot of low-level reprogramming options for GM vehicles. They echoed what I had heard and suspected all along - eventually the truck should relearn.

We went on a trip recently with our 5th wheel and the destination was about 150-160 miles away. They sold diesel fuel, but it was at least $1 more per gallon. It was nice to be able to make the full trip there and back, then fill up at home where prices were more reasonable.

I’m considering one of these. Does it require relocating the existing fuel filter at all? Has anyone also done the spin on fuel filter adapter from fleece?

Installation does not require anything be relocated. At least on the 2020+ trucks.

Good morning brothers-

Just wanted to ask a couple of questions before I start work on my truck…

1- should I put the truck on the stands so there be enough room to get the tank swap?

2- what did you guys do with the OEM tank?

Appreciate it.

Thanks!

1. I blocked the front wheels and put the rear axle on stands. It gives you the extra room to maneuver around and not be in your own way.

2. I still had some fuel in my OEM tank, and I had also bought a 5 gallon can that I filled with diesel to put in the new tank. Once I poured the 5 gallon can into the new tank, I emptied the old tank into the 5 gallon can, and then poured that into the new tank as well. The easiest way was to reach in through the sending unit hole and tear off the flapper on the fill valve. Then my buddy and I poured out its contents through the filler hole into the 5 gallon can.

After that, the OEM tank was thrown away as it was completely empty.

Good luck!

Besides the dash freaking out, any regrets with the bigger tank?

No regrets for me. I'm glad to have done it and the only thing I don't like is that when I fill up it's at least two transactions since most stations limit the purchase amount for paying at the pump. Next time I might go inside to see if they can authorize a higher amount from paying inside.

And the dash thing is super minor - it only lasts as long as the current trip when it happens. As soon as you get where to your next stop and shut the truck off, the next time you start it back up the gauge is back to normal.

My gauge has also been accurate, just as BoiseRob explained. I also monitor fuel level as a percentage on one of my iDash gauges - which is also very accurate.

I really like the tank and I have had zero issues and although the DTE is off, the fuel gauge is spot on. When the dash light turns on, I have about 50 miles left of fuel. I only ran the tank down to the fuel light so I could see how much fuel the empty tank would take which was 58.4 gallons...
