So I have a knocking comeing from my engine. Im sure a few people have heard an old gas chevy that has and exhaust leak . . . well thats exactly what it sounds like. Under idle its just fine but when I accelorate it gets worse! Any ideas of what may be causing it would be great! Thanks Drew

You are probably correct!

#3 ·
How many miles are on your truck? Have you checked or changed the oil lately?

It's an injector,or you have a exhaust leak, like you said! So,did you check the exhaust to rule out that before posting?
Any fuel in the engine oil?
What is the shape of the injectors?Sounds like you have a fuel knock/injector going out? It's hard to say without a good description..

I have 165k on the truck right now. The injectors were replaced at 177k. According to the sticker in the window the oil needs to be changed in about 2 thousand miles, which I plan on changing here real soon. I'm gonna search for a leak in the exhaust tonight (any good idea on how to do that?) I have some what of a feeling there might be a leak because there is a little bit of build up under the hood right above the left exhaust manifold. Could one of the injector already go bad? And what is fuel knock?

For the exhaust leak just look for places along the exhaust with black soot comming out. Also, havesomeone hold a rag or towel over the exhaust to block it. Might help find it.

Huh?

Sorry, I meant to say ithe injectors were changed at 117k.

How would I check for fuel in the engine oil? And what are the signs of a/all bad injectors?

Thanks Drew

#11 ·
Well I dont have that Edge Juice with Attitude. Is that a program that is flashed? Because I dont know if the previous owner did to the truck.

#12 ·
if its in limp with a pop noise its could be a injector harness, fuel filter, fuel filter housing, or frpv

#13 ·
There no "poping" noise and its not in limp mode. The truck still has plenty of power and is getting about 19 MPG.

Can anyone answer the questions I had earlier in the thread?

Pull your engine oil dipstick and smell the oil, if there is the odor of diesel fuel in it you probablly have a bad injector. If the injector is really bad your oil reading will be above the full mark on the dipstick. To me it doesnt sound like your truck has a bad injector if you are still getting 19mpg and it has a lot of power but that all could be relative to the fact that you havent felt the real power of the truck with all your injectors working.

Just discussing this with another member today, an injector going bad can be very noisy.

#20 ·
Ok thank you for the help!Ill take a look at the oil tomorrow and then probably go to autozone or wherever to get my injectors tested, but like I said I dont think I have any power loss and Im not throwing any codes.

Is it possible to have them tested and say they test out just fine and still have a problem with one of them?

And is there a way/signs of telling if your running with bad injectors (without haveing them tested)?

OK well I put a drip of oil on a paper towel and the oil just spread out there was no outer ring comeing off of it. I also gave it a smell and it didnt smell like raw diesel but it might have smelled like burnt diesel but maybe it was just the oil, my nose couldnt tell.

#25 ·
Ok so Just called the closest dealer to me and they are gonna charge me out the ass to even take a look at it.

#29 ·
Sounds typical

Where you live, someone might be close enough to run a scan with their EFI for you:drink

There is a bulletin out on the ticking sound in a Dmax!! Lengthy but reads as follows:

Bulletin No.: 02-06-01-022H

Date: August 18 2008
Subject:
Information on Engine Ticking Noise

Models:
2001-2007 Chevrolet Silverado (Classic)
2003-2009 Chevrolet Kodiak C4500/C5500 Series
2006-2009 Chevrolet Express
2001-2007 GMC Sierra (Classic)
2003-2009 GMC TopKick C4500/C5500 Series
2006-2009 GMC Savana

with 6.6L Duramax(TM) Diesel Engine (VINs D, 1, 2 - RPOs LBZ, LB7, LLY)

Supercede:

This bulletin is being revised to add model years and remove RPO LMM. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 02-06-01-022G (Section 06 - Engine/Propulsion System).

Some of the above vehicles may exhibit a random ticking noise that is most audible on an engine with a coolant temperature of 70°C (158°F) or higher and from idle to approximately 1500 RPM. The noise usually is most noticeable at the rear of the drivers side front wheel well. Customers may also comment about hearing a tick noise inside the vehicle at idle such as when sitting at a drive through window. All 6600 Duramax(TM) diesel engines have this condition; however some are more audible than others. Engine build variation from engine to engine contributes to differences in perceived volume. All Duramax(TM) engines are manufactured to very close tolerances to meet the durability and reliability standards.

This noise is caused by the relationship of the engine cylinder block crankshaft journals bearing inserts and the oil film. This relationship may allow a vibration that resonates through the cylinder block and is heard as a metallic ticking noise. The noise could be described as an irregular ticking or clacking sound like random typing on a mechanical typewriter.

This condition has been present in diesel engines produced for the last 20 or more years. The overall noise reduction in engines produced today makes this noise seem new when in fact it was masked by other noises in the past. Many manufacturers such as Isuzu Hino Mitsubishi and Nissan report a similar condition in their diesel engines. Testing and engine teardowns with this condition reveal no condition that would affect reliability or durability of this engine.

Dealers should not attempt to compare any customer vehicles exhibiting this noise with other similar vehicles as the noise is different from vehicle to vehicle and this may lead to the incorrect conclusion that the vehicle has a condition. This noise is a normal operating characteristic of the engine. This noise has no short or long term effects on the engine. Do not attempt repairs for this noise.
Important: Replacing the engine or internal components for this noise will not reduce or eliminate the noise.

Yeah but its not a ticking and I dont have the noise at idle and cant even really hear it till I take off.

#30 ·
Yeah someone just private messaged me earlier today. So well see what happens.

#31 ·
so i just took my LB7 apart this weekend because my injectores were bad and again... my truck was knocking and found out couple of my push rods were broke!!!! and my truck sounded just like ur talking about...

#34 ·
Do you beat the piss out of your truck? How many miles are on it? Breaking a pushrod is no easy task. Do you run that chip all the way up?

#32 ·
Oh that is shitty. So what was the knocking noise coming from the injectors or the push rods?

#33 ·
Well I ruled it out that an oil change didnt do anything for the knocking. I tried to fine an exhaust leak . . . but no success yet but Im going to have to look deeper. Has anyone ever had an exhaust leak or know of a common pace for them to be? The injectors were done at 117K and it now has 160K but some said it could be that but Im having no signs of bad injectors but I have someone who is going to check them out and test them this weekend. Anymore information leading to what it might be would be very helpful.

Thanks Drew
