I have 25,000 on my 2021 and this has happened to me probably 20 times since I purchased the truck in April 21. I have had it into the dealer twice with no answers. It has happened twice this week alone.
It’s still happening with my vehicle, did you get it looked at?
Depends on how you use the truck and the environment it operates in.

There is a long list of things that will prevent the stop/start from doing it's thing.
Maybe it thinks one of these is occurring?

Auto Stops may not occur and/or Auto Starts may occur because:
. The climate control settings require the engine to be running to cool or heat the vehicle interior.
. The vehicle battery charge is low.
. The vehicle battery has recently been disconnected.
. Minimum vehicle speed has not been reached since the last Auto Stop.
. The accelerator pedal is pressed.
. The engine or transmission is not at the required operating temperature.
. The outside temperature is not in the required operating range.
. The vehicle is in any gear other than D (Drive).
. Tow/Haul Mode or other driver modes have been selected.
. The vehicle is on a steep hill or grade.
. The driver door has been opened or the driver seat belt has been unbuckled.
. The hood has been opened.
. The Auto Stop has reached the maximum allowed time.

And of course, if the disable switch or an aftermarket disabler is in use.
also if it is in regen mode

Any update?
Update released Nov 2021, so 1000's will have had the update by now (including mine).
Trucks built after that time-frame will have had the update when they were built.

We don't see posts about crank/no-start repeats after the update.

The video above has an explanation from John Barta (GM) about what the update does.

Since this seems to be so common, my truck must have something different wrong, but it still has the same symptoms. Bought a 2021 RST used in Nov 22 with 28k on it.

First time having the crank no start was just after Christmas. Finally took it in this past week and they told me all the software updates were current, but they found a bulletin for a wire rubbing the alternator bracket and causes a short repaired the wire and got it back.

Had it back two days and it did it again.

It will crank the normal 2 sec and act like it is gonna start then sputter and die. Will do the same on 2nd and 3rd crank. Usually it throws a check engine light whenever it finally starts.

I've figured out that I can release the brake and press the start button a couple times and it's always started so far.

Thoughts?

Sounds like your truck has a different problem.
Crank for 2 or 3 seconds and then sputter and die is not the problem the the update addressed.

Crank / no-start would crank for 10 seconds and then time out, aborting the crank process.
Trucks did not 'fire' at all.

If you told them it tried but sputtered and dies, the tech should have known this was not the 'crank / no-start'. (service advisor might not have recognized the difference)

My 2021 gmc 3.0 elevation just did this yesterday while I was driving, it made a whining noise and while I would accelerate but truck would not accelerate speed then it died as I was moving had to pull over. pulled the battery out took it to get tested showed it was low and needed to be charged, got it charged and put battery back on still same issue long crank but engine not wanting to start went and bough a new battery and tried it same issue. Even tried to jump start truck and wouldn't start. Have no idea what's wrong with it!!! this will be the last time I buy a 1/2 ton diesel!!!

I would start a new post with that info you just replied with. That's very different than the issue reported and solved in this thread, so a new post will get more eyes on your question.

Are you saying gas engines never ever have 'issues'?
Post to help focus the thread.

First I would like to say that crank start issues are very common on all vehicles but this 35-page thread is trying to focus on a specific issue that is plaguing 3.0 Duramax owners. This issue is commonly called "crank-no-start". This is a horrible name since it's such a common issue with a lot of vehicles, so I completely understand you asking for help on this thread. However, this thread is trying to stay focused on a very unique issue that plagues the 3.0 Duramax owners. If you have any other engine I strongly suggest you look elsewhere since the issue that is being discussed here is not likely to be helpful to you in solving your crank no-start issues.

I wish you guys good luck on your starting issues. I'm sure you will find lots of useful info if you search for your specific year/make/model and engine since vehicles often have the same issues.

"
I've read/followed multiple threads on multiple forums discussing the crank-no-start issue with the 3.0L.
I don't recall anyone ever reporting that it happened in an auto stop / start situation.

Makes me think it has to do with the self checks at 'normal' start-up, that maybe aren't repeated during an auto stop/start situation.
" ...
Perhaps it doesn't happen when the engine is freshly hot.
  • Maybe some parts expanded to the perfect spots,
  • or things are more lubed up from oil recently being moved around or something.
  • Or perhaps maybe Auto stop/start has a different start-up procedure/test. The cpu might skip some normal start-up tests assuming that the tests would pass since the vehicle has just been recently running and therefore recently passed the tests. Or maybe the tests are skipped to prevent the consequences of the test failing and a person being stuck in the middle of the road because a relatively unimportant sensor is acting up.

Just some thoughts.

After a couple of false starts chasing mechanical issues, the crank/no-start problem that initiated this thread was corrected with an software correction long ago.

There is even a Youtube interview out there that has John Barta explaining the root cause and how it was corrected.

The details are likely all in the 35 pages

Interview with John Barta
  • talks about the new version of the 3.0L

Fuelly economy (Just for giggles)

Is that for all engines combined?

Lifetime, my LM2 went a little over 26 hand calc and a little under 26 DIC

My 2020
Anyone ever experience trying to start a 3.0 Duramax and it won’t fire? Starter engages and cranks engine but will not fire and start.
My 2020 GMC sierra 1503.0 Duramax is terrible. I took it to the dealer for some knock sensors to be replaced and and oil pump valve. They had my vehicle for two weeks. I went down and picked it up. I drove an hour of the road and it broke down. Had to be towed back to the dealer. Now an additional four weeks later, and they tell me my truck needs a new timing chain. Several days after that they call me and tell me the truck needs a new engine and that it will be under warranty. The next day they call me and tell me that GM has denied the engine replacement. They said they are trying to fix my engine. Here’s my problem, if the dealership feels that I need a new engine, do they really think I’m going to trust them putting a Band-Aid on it? Now it’s been six weeks I still do not have my truck and the dealership is doing very little to accommodate me. I will never buy another GM product.

Anyone get a check engine light for p1098 after getting the ECM update for the crank no start issue? I had mine in the shop last week for the crank no start, they did the update and before I left the lot i had the p1098 code pop (coolant control valve) I find it hard to believe that when I took it in i never had a check engine light for the crank no start but I am now getting one for a completely different issue....They are now telling me I need the neew coolant control valve which is on nationwide back order...

What year is your truck?

I’ve got the same problem. Just under 70k. Got stranded in Gunnison, had to get lodging and rental car, since trailer was 40 miles away. Truck started the next day. I’ve had both the shim, and software updates done. At dealership now, and tech is speaking with Detroit about a fix. From my estimation the only thing left is to replace that wheel.
