How To: EGR block off in LMM !!

Ok...after much swearing and general deliberation I think I've come up with an easy system to install an EGR block off plate in a 07.5-09 LMM. You will need :

Moving blanket or other thick blanket
2 Stubby flat blade screw drivers..I like the craftsman ones
1 12mm ratcheting wrench
1 14mm stubby open end wrench
Tin snips/hack saw/band saw

First thing to start with is removing the intake elbow from the filter box and the turbo inlet tube and set it aside. Then remove the silencer (large plastic box with the 6.6 on it) it's clamped on the underside to the turbo inlet tube and fastened in the front by a torx fastener. Now, lay the blanket over the air box and the engine bay on the passenger side up to the turbo inlet....this makes working back there ten times better. The EGR pieces you're looking for are located almost at the firewall on the passenger side of the compartment. Remove the small sensor that is screwed into the engine side of the EGR piece and move it out of the way...this will take a 14mm open end wrench. You now have as much access as you're going to get and this is where the 12mm ratcheting wrench will be your best friend. Loosen the 2 12mm nuts holding the EGR mating surfaces together...they face the firewall and are offset from one and other passenger side lower than the driver side. THEY ARE VERY TIGHT !!! You may need to link another box end wrench on your ratcheting wrench to get enough leverage to get them off...be persistent. Now the fun part...with both nuts fully removed wedge one stubby screwdriver at the top of the mating surface and pry like your life depends on it...mine was exceptionally tight. (Make sure the gasket is on the firewall side mating surface) Once you have the parts separated take the other screwdriver and wedge it in on the outside of the driver side bolt sideways. Keep working the two screwdrivers until you can get the sideways screwdriver pushed in almost almost all the way down the blade...trust me it will stay in place. Take the EGR block off plate you purchase from your retailer...I used the one from Meyer performance...and snip the ears off the far side of each plate. It should wind up looking like it's got a hook on either side where the stud will locate it...I trimmed mine like this so you can leave the screwdriver in place while you drop the plate it. Wiggle the plate into position...at this point my plate just about fell into place. Reassemble everything in reverse...don't forget that little sensor you just removed...and you should be EGR deleted. My first attempt at installing the plate took me forever...I just did a buddies truck and it took me 20 minutes start to finish...GOOD LUCK !!!!

Ok I am new to owning a diesel of my own but have tinkered with friends rigs and our farm truck, 91 F-250 non turbo 7.3 with over 400,000 on factory motor with turned up injection pump, but nothing past mods of programmer, an edge module, and exhaust upgrades on my buddies rigs. What are the pros and cons of blocking the EGR and so forth??

#228 ·
plan on doing mine here real soon. i think if you take the time to read through this whole thread you will see all the pros as to why you should be doing this, you dont want to find out the hard way later on down the road as to why this should be done. Will the edge evo race or any race edition as for that delete the egr?? I know they delete the dpf but the egr as well?? dont want any lights coming on

thats the answer i've been looking for. nice. does it just automatically delete it when you delete dpf or is there an option for egr delete as well. as in you could do one or the other. think i'll be doing this sooner than later since i wasn't sure and didn't want to buy something that didnt take care of all issues so i would have to buy more later...

dmax powered -noticed you have egr blocked in your signature but not dpf delete, did you just not fill it in or do you really still have dpf. did your race delete one but not the other?

Ok I will take more time and read through this for the pro's and con's.
Draz, I also have that same question but for a PPE Hot+2 Race programmer. It has DPF delete but will it also delete the EGR and no codes thrown when I block it?
I like my remote start and it will not remote start will not work when service engine light it on.

i know im late to this thread but can anyone tell me if it looks like that is a plate in there or just the normal way it looks. Debating about doing the plate if its not in there. Just cant seem to find the best way to get my hand back there.
Thanks

thats the oem gasket, the plate will have a tab on it. some people get rid of the tab though but i believe the people that do that cut down a lot of it to try and make it easier to get it in. the oem gasket has round holes for the bolts so it slips on before its all put together, the plate slides in from the side hence the cut out grooves to slide around the bolts. watch out though because the gasket has a cut out on it so you will think its the slots but get a mirror down in there and you will see its not. good luck

ok. Thanks. This seems likes its gonna be a huge PITA to just get those bolts loose. I thought the plate would go in from the top? Now im confused on which was the plate would go in.

#243 ·
yes. it is a huge PITA. :(

the PCV is more important than the EGR IMO, which I see you have already done.

#244 ·
ya just did that a few weeks ago

#245 ·
if you have the EGR off on your EFI tunes, I wouldn't really stress the plate.

with the PCV vented, no more sticky fumes are getting into your intake, and the soot can't stick to it, and gum up your bidnessssss... :)

ok sounds good. ya when i talked to rob he said he was turned off.

I went out to install the blocker plate two nights ago. Got the two nuts loose without too much trouble (tight fit though). I can't get the blocker plate into position. The exhaust pipe on the the firewall side is pinching against the bottom of the EGR cooler at the flange. I can pry things open and get the top in (down to about the last 1/4") but that is it! I am thinking of cutting the ears off of the plate (as suggested here) but am concerned that the flange will be prone to cracking when the nuts are tightened to an uneven surface. How tight do the nuts need to be? Should I be concerned about cracks?

thanks

i just got in from the bottom and pryed it apart like my life depended on it and had someone else pop it in from the top and it went right in. just didnt feel right cutting tabs off as i felt it wouldn't sit right. if it doesnt sit right it might whistle. didnt want to risk it and cut tabs because no putting them back on. just noticed you have a classic though so not sure how that works

If you can hire the Burger King actor Jeremy Kent Jackson to do this job for you; I highly recommend it. I left alot of blood under there.
