Is Amsoil good oil?

I have a 2003 lb7 duramax with 135k on it. I was thinking of running Amsoil oil the next oil change. Have you guys had good luck with that stuff. Is it worth the extra money. I know that some oil such as rotella causes a ticking noise and that crap is annoying lol. Does AMSOIL usually cause this also. I’m probably opening a can of worms but oh well. Any advise would be great!

Amsoil, dino oil, and most any synthetic show the same wear metals, and in the same concentrations. There is no "Magic"

Dino oil cost less than synthetics, but lasts 5,000 miles

Synthetics cost twice what Dino costs, but lasts 10,000

Amsoil costs three times as much.

You do the math....

Here's the best deal around....

$100 for 4 gallons, with free shipping. The rebate just ended on this, that brought the price down to $50, for 4 gallons.

First I'm a dealer and there is a huge difference with a synthetic, I know as I have taken apart many engines with both and saw the wear difference, I use the premium diesel oil from amsoil in my truck good for 25,000 miles but I change about 10,000, Amsoil will pay for your engine if the oil is proven to be the cause of any failure, using for over thirty years in anything that takes oil, I blew up A Cummins and the Amsoil saved 90% of the engine, oh yeah I blew all the oil out at 80 mph! try that with "normal oil"

I’ve been running Amsoil since I have owned my 08 LMM, had 63k when I bought it and now 183k. I run it in the engine and trans and I will keep running it as long as I own her. It’s worth the piece of mind not having to worry about oil issues for the few extra dollars. You can be confident if you run the signature series on 15k oil changes. If you do heavy towing you will want to change more often I’m sure.

I run amsoil and have been for well over 100,000 miles. Amsoil is well respected as One Of if not The best synthetic out there and synthetics are supposed to handle heat a lot better than conventionals so I think ESPECIALLY for the guys towing hard, or running compounds turbos, or an aftermarket higher volume oil pump (anything to raise oil temps) synthetics are the only thing way to go. Im running mobile delvac right now but only till this new motor is broken in and then its getting amsoil asap. Amsoil is rated to 25K but I run it about 18K and change it and it still saves me money and its a whole lot less work changing it once instead of 3 times in that 18K.

Go on Bob's the Oil Guy, and search " Amsoil UOA's ". You'll find plenty of posts were guys paid allot of money for this stuff, and were disappointed when the same wear metals showed up in the same , or greater concentrations than with whatever they were using before.

Also, search this forum for threads where someone blew up their truck due to oil selection. You cant. No bearing issues. No flat cams. No valvetrain wear. Nothing......

Guys have even driven a bizzillion miles on that super cheapo Walmart Super Tec oil without issues.

The Duramax platform simply doesnt care..... just feed it a decent oil and change it every so often... and thats about all you need to do.

There is zero proof that Amsoil does any better, than anything else.

You get people that love amsoil and people that think its just snake oil. I run rotella t6 full synthetic. Rotella is a pretty common oil for all diesels. I dont personally feel that the more you spend on oil the best it is. The engineers designed it to a spec and as long as you hit that, in reality, you are good.

Ive seen the cold flow test at -40F of supertech vs amsoil, video is on youtube if yal wanna see, its a very simple test. Theres no way I would use supertech at walmart in a anything I own unless I simply didnt care about it, at -40F it wouldnt even pour out of the jug. Ive heard most of the wear on an engine is from cranking it with no oil pressure for that first few seconds. Ill pay a little more for my oil even if its just for piece of mind. Personally I think the quality of the oil filter is more important than what oil you use though as long as you use a high quality oil.

It's probably a very high quality product but the prices are outrageous. It isn't "a few dollars more", it's close to double the price of a reasonably good oil.

And it's the Amway of the automotive oil business.

Anytime someone says they will never ever use any other product in any of their stuff, I suspect brainwashing. I don't meany any of the posts above, I mean the guys that even buy it for their lawnmower.

I disagree with the prices being outrageous, 2.5 gallon jug of mobile delvac and a mobile 1 filter for my truck cost me $45 at walmart. Thats good for about 6K miles, Multiply that times 3 and I would get 18K miles of oil for $135. Sign up to be a preferred customer at Amsoil and I can get an oil change for right at $100, I run it 18K miles also. So im saving $35 and only doing the work once instead of 3 times, If you paid someone instead of doing it yourself those 1 vs 3 times that another 30 or 40 bucks your saving

Eh, I'm not a believer in oil AND lube every cycle. Every 2-3 or so. And then, only 1-2 pulls.
I guess if you're fording creeks on a regular basis, then more.

And not a fan of overfilling, you're not repacking a wheel bearing.
Blowing out the cups, YES.

I'm on the Schaeffer's wagon with the full syn 9000. With the M-1 filter, about $85 per.
I stay with the DIC which is around 10k, but the rep says I should run further, but....

oils oil, it doesnt wear out, it gets dirty...

I have run conventional oil up to 24,000 miles before. Oil analysis.

If you wanna pay more for the same results go right ahead.

I work at a place that sells and ships building products to 48 or 49 states. We have our own semi trucks, I think there is about 8 of them.. Anyways they will only warranty them if we run mobile delvac in them, im sure they have a deal worked out with mobile. The recommended drain interval is 50,000 miles, and these trucks have the dpf and all the emissions stuff still intact still.

There are alot more things about oil that are just as important as cold flow. I have no idea the actual numbers but what if mobile one is slightly better at cold flow but it lacks on the other end of the spectrum (protection at extremely high temperatures) which would be more important to me than -40f flow since I dont ever see close to -40f.. just like you said you cant choose because of one video test.

Your the one that brought the cold test up, I’m just posting it.

People either run Amsoil or they don’t.

To the OP, is Amsoil good? Sure, it’s a quality product. Is it worth the price? Probably not but to each there own. I personally don’t run it, but I can’t tell you if it’s better or worse because I’ve never opened a motor that spent its life on Amsoil and my current choice.

Just our experience but my dad had a large forklift with a cummins engine he used for picking up and moving portable sheds (he owns a shed building plant in mississippi). Anyways he left the plant in the hands of a manager for several months to come home and take a break. When he went back down there about 1 year later to do the maintenece on all the equipment which he uses amsoil in all of, he realized after pulling the drain plug that noeone had been checking the oil in anything because about a half a cup of oil came out and the oil filter was about half fuel. That engine had been running for months with very little of anything in it, that was about 2 or 3 years ago. Last I knew that engine still runs like a top 5 days a week. Not saying the same thing couldnt have happened with any other oil but that made us more of a believer than ever that amsoil is good stuff.

But im in the same boat as you DaJokr, I have never torn a motor down to actually see so these are just my opinions. When my piston cracked in my lbz at 252,000 miles I could still go 18K on an oil change and never have to add any. Very very little blow by..

#26 ·
Because I believe there is a huge difference in a quality oil like mobile 1 or amsoil vs that supertech walmart crap.

#27 ·
OP, yes I have had good look with amsoil, whether its worth the money or not is mostly dependant on wether or not your willing to run it the extended drain intervals. As far as the famous "Typewriter tick" I have seen trucks that do it, they done it with amsoil too.

I will tell you when I did run Amsoil, when I lived in Fairbanks AK in the early 80s. It was the only synthetic oil I knew of at the time and it was in my engine and both front and rear differentials.

The differential fluid made a HUGE improvement on those sub zero days of winter when you could feel the thick Dino oil bogging down your forward movement til it warmed up. With the Amsoil that was not an issue, no internal drag caused by thickened gear oil.

Once I changed to the Amsoil differentil fluid I also changed the engine oil to Amsoil. I figured that the engine oil was thick too, even though I ran the block heater all night long (US Army was paying the electric bill) :grin2:

Now with the advent of synthetic oil available everywhere else, I run the Rotella T6 for significantly less money.

I use Rotella T6 and love it. No upper engine noise.

Everybody likes to give an opinion. I can tell you my experience. I installed an Amsoil duel remote filter system on my 2002 duramax with 3k miles on it. Every 6 months , I sent a sample of my oil to an independent testing company. I put 15-20k on the truck for 5 years. At 100,000, I changed the oil for the first time because it tested ready to change. Yes, 100,000 miles. Now it has 265k. I change it once a year and the two filters yearly. You can call it over rated. I call it amazing. You pay more for the superior additives, not the base stock. Amsoil pays. I value my equipment enough to use the best. Enough said!

I love Amsoil. The only thing I don’t run it in is the tranny (Allison transynd). Diffs, t case and engine get nothing but Amsoil. Sign up for the preferred customer thing and get discounts and free shipping. Not to mention they make all kinds of other stuff for motorcycles, ATVs, greasing zirks, cleaning guns, waterproofing boots etc etc.
